Events - Poetry Slam

The History
Slam is the competitive art of performance poetry, rapping or emceeing (with or without beatbox, but with no backing track), where artists slam it out over a hot microphone in front of a loud and lively audience - and panel of judges made up of professionals in the field.

SLAMbassadors UK is a unique slam. Over the last two years the judges have included Joelle Taylor, Benjamin Zephaniah, Scroobius Pip, Adisa and Linton Kwesi Johnson - all of whom performed live with the winning poets/ rappers. We aim to repeat that experience this year in the Westminster area, in collaboration with Paddington Arts.

WEST LONDON SLAM & PADDINGTON ARTS: We invited local schools to bring a selected group of up to 15 young people to attend a two-day workshop at Paddington Arts. The first day focused on working with a well known spoken word artist in exploring poetic techniques, themes, beatbox and polyvocal poetry, and the second aimed at honing performance skills and filming their completed entries for the national championships.

WHEN: The heats will take place during October and would lead directly to a regional slam championship on Thursday November 10th at Paddington Arts. All of the participants will also be entered into the national slam championship via film.
